The Farmington High School Building Committee met on December 16, 2024, for a hybrid meeting to discuss construction updates, financial approvals, and plans for the months ahead. Missed it? Watch the full meeting here. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Minutes Approved
The November 2024 minutes were swiftly approved without objections. Chair Meg Jones opened the meeting by thanking committee members for their ongoing commitment and efficiency.
2. Construction Progress Highlights
Central Office Renovation
The renovation project is 35% complete, with significant progress on interior work. Exterior work is paused until spring, with the gas meter installation being a major milestone.
1928 Building Site Work
Sanitary line installation is progressing steadily, now just five feet from the building. Wayfinding signage is also being updated to improve navigation around the campus.
Grandstand Planning
The committee continues to work on finalizing plans for the grandstands, which have significant lead times. “We’re on track to have materials ready well ahead of installation to avoid delays,” explained Russ Williams, Project Manager.
Addressing Mechanical Issues
A frozen backflow relief valve in the fire suppression system over the weekend prompted quick action. Contractors insulated the valve temporarily to prevent further freezing.
“The system performed as designed, and fire safety was never compromised,” said Williams. Photos of the issue were shared, illustrating the proactive response.
3. Financial Decisions
The committee approved invoices totaling $2.8 million. Notable expenditures include:
- $77,432.85 for audio equipment upgrades.
- $15,746.25 and $11,916.24 for technology improvements in classrooms.
Change Orders
- $17,002 for removing an underground oil tank discovered during sidewalk renovations.
- $10,000 to address connectivity issues with new wireless access points in the cafeteria.
- $5,800 to conduct ground-penetrating radar for a rumored 1985 time capsule, which was not found.
Committee members expressed satisfaction with the budget alignment and progress on these items.
5. Meeting Schedule Update
The committee approved its 2025 meeting calendar, with the first meeting of the year scheduled for January 15, 2025. The January 1 meeting was canceled due to the New Year holiday.
“We’re set for a productive year and are grateful for everyone’s hard work,” said Chair Meg Jones.
