Public Comment

No residents chimed in during the public comment portion. The committee quickly moved on to the administrative agenda items.

Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes

  • The committee unanimously approved the January 7, 2025 meeting minutes. ✅

Updated Rules of Procedure

  • The committee reaffirmed that the Town Council liaison would serve as chair, with the staff liaison acting as recording secretary. This prevents having to update the rules whenever the Town Council liaison changes.

Town-Wide Cleanup Event

  • Posters & Sign-Up: Expect a fresh poster design soon, along with an online sign-up to make participation easier.
  • Prizes: Members are coordinating with local businesses for potential giveaways to volunteers.
  • Stickers for Signs: The committee approved spending $90 for updated stickers to help promote the event.
  • Marketing: Plans are underway to spotlight the cleanup in the town newsletter and business e-newsletter, aiming to draw volunteers from across Farmington.

Public Education Initiatives

  • Dark Skies Reminder: After featuring dark skies education in a previous newsletter, the committee discussed further ways to raise awareness about light pollution. They floated the idea of a public presentation or library event that emphasizes the impact of light on migrating birds and the environment.
  • Recycling & Composting: Future newsletters will include tips on reducing waste and properly sorting recyclables.
  • Storm Water Tips: Upcoming reminders will emphasize keeping drains clear of anything other than rainwater and cleaning up after pets.

Waste Reduction & School Composting

  • IAR (Irving A. Robbins) Middle School: Beginning January 2026, funds will be allocated to start a composting program, including the purchase of sorting stations and student education.
  • Budget Outlook: The cost for equipment and maintenance will be partially offset by a grant, pending final approval in the Board of Education’s budget.

Business Outreach

  • Green Questionnaire: The committee plans to circulate a brief survey to local businesses, encouraging them to share any eco-friendly initiatives—like installing solar panels, opting for heat pumps, or reducing single-use waste.

Potential Tree Planting Initiatives

  • Members briefly discussed the possibility of a structured tree-planting program in Farmington. Options may include partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation for saplings, reviewing zoning guidelines for new developments, or creating a unified town tree-coverage plan.

Closing & Next Meeting

  • After covering all topics, the committee moved to adjourn. The next meeting will be held on March 4, 2025, where members plan to finalize the Town-Wide Cleanup details and continue waste-reduction discussions.
