Farmington High School Committee Reviews Construction Progress and Superintendent Search

Farmington High School Committee Reviews Construction Progress, Navigates Superintendent Search

At precisely 5:02 PM on June 18, 2025 the Farmington High School Committee navigated the challenges of Zoom fatigue, complete with a rusty rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance. “Okay, we’re rusty on the virtual Pledge of Allegiance,” Chair Devin humorously noted. 😅

Business as Usual

Following the pledge, the meeting quickly progressed to public comments—which, absent any attendees, swiftly moved on.

The committee unanimously approved minutes from the May 21 and June 4 meetings. A minor hiccup occurred when Wendy initially struggled to locate the June 4 minutes, prompting a quick clarification from Devin and a genial “No, no problem, Wendy. Thank you for asking.”

Liaison Reports

Board of Education liaison Beth reported the superintendent search remains paused, with interim superintendent Kathy graciously stepping in. Another search round is slated for August. Beth also described a recent tour of the new central office space as “fabulous” and noted the appreciation for staff finally enjoying modern workspaces comparable to those at the high school.

Chris provided the 1928 Building Committee update via Kat, who detailed progress including framing, elevator installation, and leveling the gym to transform it into a multipurpose space.

Financials and Construction Updates

Russ assured the committee that project finances remain stable, despite pending change orders. A detailed contingency plan will address central office overages.

Jessica’s construction manager report highlighted near completion of various projects, including curbs, walkways, hydroseeding, grandstand demolition, and new greenhouse construction. Punch-list items are ongoing, with adjustments such as additional acoustic panels needed in the Black Box Theater to correct sound issues.

Chris, representing the owner’s rep, succinctly summarized ongoing punch-list checks with no major hurdles.

Legislative and Operational Updates

Kat shared positive legislative news: a previous cap on reimbursable expenses related to procurement issues with TSKP and Arcadis was lifted, providing greater financial flexibility for the town. She also confirmed that most future meetings would remain virtual, noting the efficiency and convenience this format offers during summer months.

The committee then swiftly canceled the July 2nd meeting, with several members already noting holiday conflicts.
