Kayaking with a Splash of Accessibility: Paddles Up, Barriers Down! 🚣♂️
The Canton Community Health Fund (CCHF) has announced its financial support for Summit Adaptive Sports, a New Hartford-based organization that makes kayaking on the Farmington River accessible for individuals with disabilities. This initiative, operating from Collinsville Canoe & Kayak at 41 Bridge St. in Collinsville, is making a considerable impact within Canton’s community.
Expanding Access to Water Sports
The adaptive kayaking program, operating since 2023, offers the disabled community an opportunity to partake in outdoor water sports. Summit Adaptive Sports, which traditionally specializes in winter sports, extends its mission to the rivers during warmer months. The program is inclusive, allowing people with varying abilities to enjoy the picturesque views and calming waters of the Farmington River alongside their caregivers, friends, and family.
New Investments, Greater Impact
CCHF chairperson Sylvia Cancela revealed that the foundation’s grant will fund the purchase of specially adapted kayaks and essential equipment. This includes gear to assist those in wheelchairs with kayaking, enhancing the program’s accessibility and reach.
Equally critical, CCHF’s funds will also sponsor CPR training for Summit Adaptive Sports volunteers. This ensures that participants have a safer environment while navigating the water.
Community and Support
Summit Adaptive Sports’ Executive Director, Karen Cook, emphasized the significance of this contribution. “Canton Community Health Fund’s investment in Summit Adaptive Sports, coupled with Collinsville Canoe & Kayak’s expert support, helps us raise awareness of access to outdoor sports and recreation for individuals with disabilities,” she remarked.
Michelle Buerkler of Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, who also serves as a liaison for the adaptive sports program, echoed this sentiment. Buerkler stressed the initiative’s transformative power, highlighting its role in fostering community connections through shared activities.
“These efforts transform the lives of people with disabilities by connecting them to their community through shared passions, personal dignity, adventure, and exercise,” said Buerkler.
