Farmington Board of Education Discusses Major Updates in Superintendent’s Report

Farmington, CT—Superintendent Kathy Greider presented several significant updates in her comprehensive report at the Board of Education’s special meeting on June 3, 2024. The meeting highlighted the district’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence and community engagement, covering everything from summer programs to major construction projects.

Summer Learning Programs Set to Engage Students

Superintendent Greider detailed an array of summer learning opportunities to foster educational growth during the vacation months. The programs include the Summer Exploration Academy at Westwoods, which will host approximately 140 students. The district’s renowned strings and band camps are also set to return, with 150 and 50 students enrolled, respectively.

Additionally, a middle-level Summer Academy at Irving A. Robbins Middle School will accommodate around 15 students, while the high school credit recovery courses expect about 75 participants. These programs are designed to support students in mastering essential skills and making up for any academic gaps.

Progress on the Farmington High School Building Project

Meg Guerrero, Chair of the FHS Building Committee, provided an update on the new high school construction project. Marking three years since the referendum approval, Guerrero announced that the project remains on schedule and within budget. The new building is expected to open for the 2024-2025 school year, with students starting in the new facility.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for August 26, 2024, allowing the community to tour the state-of-the-art school. The project timeline also includes the renovation of the central office building, demolition work, and the construction of new tennis courts, all set to be completed by June 2025.

Continuing Education Programs Thrive

Laurie, the outgoing Coordinator of Continuing Education, shared highlights from the 2023-2024 academic year. Enrollment in the state-mandated programs, including ESL, GED, ABE, and citizenship classes, increased significantly, with 334 participants from 42 countries.

Laurie introduced new initiatives like the GED Math Bootcamp and noted that several ESL students have gained employment within the Farmington Public Schools system. Brenda Donlon will succeed Laurie, bringing extensive experience from Middletown Adult Education.

Excel Program Shows Strong Performance

Brian Zario, Director of the Farmington Extended Care and Learning (Excel) Program, reported a successful year with increased student enrollment and financial stability. The program, which includes before- and after-school care, preschool, and various enrichment activities, enrolled over 548 students.

Zario highlighted the success of the Excel STEM Expo and the positive impact of student interns from Farmington High School. The program remains self-sustaining and continues to expand its offerings to meet community needs.
