Part-Time Firefighter: The Dream Job of Every Kid, but for Adults

Ever wish you could go back to the days when playing with fire trucks was the highlight of your week? Now you can, and get paid for it! The Town of Farmington Fire Department is on the hunt for eligible candidates to fill the prestigious boots of Part-Time Firefighters.

The Perks:

  • Salary: A cool $20.00/hr. That’s right, you’ll be rolling in dough while saving cats from trees.
  • Flexibility: Cover shifts for absent career firefighters or when extra hands are needed. Think of it as being the superhero stand-in.
  • Probationary Period: A 12-month test of your mettle. Prove your worth, and you’re in!

The Application Gauntlet:

To apply, you must submit all the following to Amber Rush at 1 Monteith Drive, Farmington, CT 06032, or via email at RushA@farmington-ct.org. Note: Applications missing any items will be fed to the dragon in the town square.

  1. Town of Farmington Employment Application: Download it here. Fill it out. Don’t mess up.
  2. Certifications Galore:
    • Firefighter 2 Certification (IFSAC or ProBoard).
    • Current Emergency Medical Technical Certification.
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider Certification.
    • Connecticut Class 2 license with Q Endorsement or CDL-B with Tanker Endorsement.
    • Successfully attained CPAT Card within the last year, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  3. Training Records: List every training class or drill you’ve completed since November 1, 2018. Don’t skimp on details.

You’ll need to keep up with 15 training requirements annually, documented through lesson plans and drill sign-in sheets:

  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Safety and Protective Equipment

  • Fire Streams
  • Hose
  • Pumping Fire Apparatus
  • Ladders
  • Rescue
  • Forcible Entry
  • Ventilation
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations
  • Live Fire Training

  • Background Check, Drug Test, and Physical Exam: Pass these, and you’re one step closer to glory.
  • Personal Protective Gear: Supplied by the TFFD, including Turnout Gear and SCBA face mask. Maintain them like your life depends on it—because it might.
  • Performance Evaluations: Annual evaluations to ensure you’re still the superhero we hired.

Daily Duties: A Day in the Life

  • Conduct daily inspections, handle administrative details, and perform firehouse chores.
  • Respond to calls for service while on duty.
  • Report to the Volunteer Fire Chief of your assigned station for duty shifts.
