December Performance by the Numbers
Farmington’s water system operated efficiently last month, maintaining its high standards:
- Average daily flow: 2.5 million gallons.
- BOD removal efficiency: 98%.
- TSS removal efficiency: 99%.
- Nitrogen removal: 89.6%, under the permit limit of 178 pounds per day.
Mark Thompson, the WPCA’s Chief Operator, praised the team’s efforts:
“Keeping nitrogen removal at nearly 90% efficiency is no small feat. Our team works hard to ensure compliance and protect Farmington’s waterways.”
Maintenance Highlights: Creativity Saves the Day
Rain Gutters to the Rescue
When facing an expensive auto-control unit replacement, the team turned to a humble solution: rain gutters. By attaching rain gutters to the unit, they reduced water intrusion and extended the lifespan of the carbon pellets, saving thousands of dollars.
“It may not look fancy, but those rain gutters are saving us thousands in replacement costs,” joked Stanley Reid, Senior Technician. “Sometimes, simple solutions are the best ones!”
Aging Infrastructure
The dry well hatch, installed in 1995, is nearing the end of its lifespan. Engineering Supervisor Sarah Mills explained the team’s plan to upgrade:
“This hatch has served us well for nearly 30 years. But it’s time to modernize—we’re planning smarter fixes to keep costs down.”
Tackling Emergencies with Quick Action
On December 23, the team responded to a high-current alarm at the 23rd Street pump station. A blockage in pump #2 was cleared without incident, showcasing the operators’ readiness.
“We’re not just fixing problems—we’re anticipating them,” said John Carter, Project Manager. “Our goal is to ensure smooth operations for years to come.”
Safety and Compliance Updates
Safety was also a top priority this month:
- Confined Space Protocols: Operators reviewed and implemented updates to comply with OSHA recommendations.
- Color-Coded Safety Systems: The team introduced a new lockout/tagout procedure using color-coded keys to simplify processes and improve safety.
A Community Perspective
Farmington residents appreciate the team’s dedication to keeping the water system running efficiently. Laura Greene, a local environmental advocate, highlighted its importance:
“Farmington’s clean water initiatives are something we can all be proud of. The team’s dedication keeps our town thriving.”
