Matthew Corey Wins GOP Primary, Faces Tough Senate Battle Against Chris Murphy

Local Man Wins GOP Primary, Faces Inevitable Defeat Against Popular Incumbent

Matthew Corey Secures GOP Nomination for U.S. Senate in Connecticut Primary

Matthew Corey, a Manchester businessman and Navy veteran, emerged victorious in Tuesday’s Connecticut Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, defeating Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith. Corey, who previously challenged Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Murphy in 2018, will again face Murphy in what is anticipated to be an uphill battle in the November general election.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Corey garnered 18,833 votes (54%) to Smith’s 15,600 votes (46%), according to unofficial results. Despite Smith’s earlier endorsement by the state GOP at its convention, Corey’s grassroots solid support and previous name recognition helped him secure the nomination.

The Republican primary saw a notably low voter turnout, with only around 7% of the state’s registered Republicans casting ballots. This is significantly lower than the turnout in the GOP’s U.S. Senate primary two years ago, signaling potential challenges for the party as they prepare for the general election.

Corey, who owns the One Wood Pub in East Hartford, celebrated his win with a small group of supporters at his establishment, where he took breaks from watching election results to serve customers. After his victory, Corey expressed his commitment to making a solid case for Connecticut voters in the upcoming race against Murphy. “Tonight, I start bringing the case to unaffiliated and Democratic voters that they need a Senator who fights for them,” Corey said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Gerry Smith, who conceded the race shortly after 10 p.m., expressed his support for Corey, emphasizing the importance of unity within the party as they head into the general election. “We ran a clean campaign, and now it’s time to focus on winning in November,” Smith stated.

The upcoming general election poses significant challenges for Corey. Senator Chris Murphy, a two-term incumbent, enters the race with a substantial financial advantage, holding over $9.7 million in campaign funds compared to Corey’s $32,000. Moreover, Connecticut has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1982, and the state’s electorate leans heavily Democratic.

Murphy’s campaign manager, Max Glass, released a statement following Corey’s primary win, saying, “Chris is looking forward to working hard over the next 12 weeks to elect Kamala Harris and Democrats up and down the ballot while keeping up his work in the Senate to deliver for people in Connecticut.”

The race for the U.S. Senate is one of several key contests in Connecticut this November, as Republicans seek to increase their representation in a state that has been dominated by Democrats at the federal level. However, with a low turnout in the primary and a significant financial gap to overcome, the road ahead for Corey is steep.

As the general election approaches, voter outreach and campaign funding will be critical factors in determining the success of both candidates.
