Farmington’s Roads: A Never-Ending Nightmare You Can’t Wake Up From

Welcome, fellow Farmingtonians, to yet another thrilling chapter of our town’s never-ending saga of roadwork—where the roads are made up and your travel time doesn’t matter! If you thought getting anywhere in Farmington was difficult, strap in because things are about to get as smooth as a jackhammer on concrete.

For those of you who have had the misfortune of growing up on Mountain Spring Road, like yours, you’re probably used to the sound of construction as your daily alarm clock. But this time, it’s not just our charming little mountain strip getting the makeover. No, this is a town-wide effort to make sure you spend more time in your car than with your family. Here’s the lowdown on where and when you’ll be cursing under your breath:

Burlington Road: The Never-Ending Story

If you’ve been cruising down Burlington Road thinking, “I’ve got this roadwork timed perfectly,” think again. The town’s contractors have decided to extend the fun until November. That’s right, Burlington Road will continue transforming into a single-lane amusement ride from 7 AM to 3 PM every weekday. Alternating traffic means you’ll get plenty of time to admire the finer details of the roadwork—like the bright orange cones and the occasional confused flagger who seems just as lost as you are.

Farmington Avenue (Rt. 4): Your One-Way Ticket to Gridlock

Starting Wednesday, August 14th, and running until Friday, August 16th, Farmington Avenue will be down to one lane eastbound from Main Street (Rt. 10) to High Street. You’ll want to pack a lunch, a dinner, and maybe breakfast for the next day as you sit in what’s expected to be some of the most glorious traffic jams Farmington has ever seen. If you’re smart or just desperate, you’ll seek alternate routes. But let’s be honest, in Farmington, every route is an alternate route when roadwork season hits.

Mountain Spring Road: The True Test of Patience

And here’s the pièce de résistance—Mountain Spring Road. My old stomping grounds will be closed to through traffic from Wednesday, August 14th, to Wednesday, August 28th, from 7 AM to 5 PM. That’s two full weeks of blissful isolation for residents and a complete nightmare for anyone else who thought they could use it as a shortcut. But don’t worry; residents will still have access, so if you live there, you’ll be treated to the sound of backup alarms and the sweet smell of asphalt right outside your front door. For everyone else? Find another way to get lost in Farmington.

Final Thoughts: Or Are They?

Before you grab your pitchforks and storm Town Hall, remember that roadwork schedules are as unpredictable as a New England weather forecast. The Farmington Police Department reminds us that everything is subject to change, which is just their polite way of saying, “Good luck!” So, set your alarms early, leave the house with plenty of snacks, and remember—this is Farmington. You’re not getting anywhere fast.

And as always, we’d like to thank our sponsor, Farmington Storage, for reminding us that when the roadwork makes you want to move out of town, they’ve got plenty of space to store your belongings. Located at 155 Scott Swamp Road, because if you’re going to be stuck in traffic, you might as well be near your storage unit.

Happy driving, Farmington!
